UNIVOX: HI-Flier
circa 1972

Univox HiFlier- sunburst, solid body, 2 pickup, surf rock style guitar This is an early 1970's (circa 1972), Univox Hi-Flier, solid body, electric guitar. I believe this is a Phase 2 HiFlier because of the low serial number (0108xx). The guitar is sunburst. It's a Japanese made knock-off of the Mosrites. It has a rosewood fretboard, mother of pearl inlays, double cutaway, 2 humbucking pickups (they don't hum so I'm assuming they're humbuckers), whammy bar, and Steel Adjustable Neck. It's very lightweight and thin. The dimensions are: 39" x 13" x 1 1/4". Description from VintageSilvertones.com
It is completely original. The neck is straight. All the electronics work correctly although the pots are a little scratchy when adjusting them but once in postion they're clean sounding. It's extremely clean overall; definitely a closet classic. There's a couple of chips in the paint and one scrape on the lower part of the body. There's also a minor finish crack around the neck.

The bridge pickup has a great surf-rock or punk sound. The neck pickup is full but still with a bite but turning down the tone just slightly will smooth the sound out dramatically. So overall it's got a nice range of tones. It includes the original case which is in good condition. The Hi-Fliers did not seem to come with the standard Univox-branded case but this one conforms to the body style so I'm assuming it's original.

This guitar was made in the infamous Matsumoko guitar factory in Japan. It's the same factory that produced the Aria and Ibanez guitars. It was also the factory/company that was involved in the copyright lawsuit of the 1970's.Description from VintageSilvertones.com

Univox guitars were made from the early 1960's through 1978. The guitars were made in Japan at the Matsumoko factory which burned down in 1985. Unicord also manufactured amplifiers in Westbury New York but eventually moved the production to Japan. After 1978 the name changed to Westbury and then Stage guitars. The company changed hands or merged several times over it's history but the main company was called Unicord. They stopped producing guitars and amps in 1985 and had the remainder of the company bought by Korg at that time.
